乔：学校里的人会怎么看这新发型？

Joe: What will the people at school say when they see your new haircut?

安妮：他们会大感意外。

Ann: Theyll have a fit.

安妮：若他们知道我睡在你房里呢？

Ann: What would they say if they knew Id spent the night in your room？

乔：这样吧，大家先保守这个秘密。

Joe: Well, I tell you what. You dont tell your folks, and I wont tell mine.

安妮：一言为定。

Ann: Its a pact.

乔：想喝点儿什么？

Joe: Well, what would you like to drink?

安妮：香槟，谢谢。

Ann: Champagne,please.

(乔给服务生说，给这位女士来香槟，自己要一杯冷咖啡。)

乔：中午饭时喝香槟，这是贵族学校里的生活吧。

Joe: Must be quite a life you have in that school. Champagne for lunch.

安妮：只有在特别场合才喝。

Ann: Only on special occasions.

乔：例如呢？

Joe: For instance？

安妮：上次喝香槟是父亲的纪念日。

Ann: The last time was my fathers anniversary.

乔：结婚纪念日。

Joe: Wedding？

安妮：不是，在他从事这份工作后，是四十周年的纪念。

Ann: No, It was the 40th anniversary of the day he got his job.

乔：做了四十年的工作，真是非同凡响。

Joe: Forty years on the job. What do you know about that?

乔：他从事什么工作？

Joe: What does he do？

安妮：你可以认为他是做公关工作的

Ann: Well, mostly you might call it public relations.

乔：那么工作挺辛苦的。

Joe: Well, thats hard work.

安妮：我不喜欢这份工作。

Ann: Yes, I wouldnt care for it.

乔：他呢？

Joe: Does he?

安妮：他也有过抱怨。

Ann: Ive heard him complain about it.

乔：为什么他不辞职呢

Joe: Why doesnt he quit?

安妮：做他那一行的人极少有人会辞职的,除非是身体不好，无法继续工作了。

Ann: Well, people in that line of work almost never do quit, unless its actually unhealthy for them to continue.

乔：那么，祝他健康。

Joe: well, heres to his health,then.

安妮：人人都是这么跟他说的。

Ann: You know, thats what everybody says.

乔：好喝吗？

Joe: Its all right?

安妮：谢谢，很好喝。

Ann: Yes, thank you.

安妮：那你是做什么工作的的？

Ann: What is your work?

乔：我是做生意的。

Joe: Im in the selling game.

安妮：真的吗？那么有意思。你是做什么生意的？

Ann: Really? How interseting. What do you sell？

乔：化肥。化学品。诸如此类。

Joe: Fertilizer. Chemicals. You know, chemicals. Stuff like that.

●have a fit

v. 用于口语，疑似大吃一惊，勃然大怒。（不是试穿）

例：his fatherd have a fit if he knew what the guy was up to!

他的父亲如果知道他干了什么一定会勃然大怒！

●“辞职”怎么说？

resign

quit office

hand in ones resignation

send in ones jacket

例：Why he doesnt send in his jacket = Why he doesnt quit

按照字面意思会理解为“为什么他没有送来他的夹克衫”，其实表示辞职。

●如何询问别人工作

我可否问问你是做什么工作的？

May I ask you what business youre in?

我能问一下，你是做什么工作的吗？

May I know what you do?

你是做什么工作的？

Whats your job？
