For the last decade, Joanne Frances from the UK has been living life as if the Second World War has just broken out. The 41-year-old has eschewed modern life and technology in favor an authentic wartime existence.
She has no computer, washing machine, television or car—instead cycling to work on an 80-year-old bike. Living most days in an authentic Land Girl’s uniform, she sometimes spends the evening in an air-raid shelter she built in the garden.
The woman, who works as a cleaner, has committed to the austere life of the 1940s. But one thing is missing from her life—a wartime husband.
“I would like to meet someone,” she said. “I’ve had few boyfriends, but I know I’m a bit of a novelty and once that novelty wears off, most people find me quite hard to live with. But I still like to think that I am a pretty good catch.”
While many small towns or cities around the world feature statues or attractions paying tribute to local heroes or figures, some have gone out of their way to create something kooky to lure visitors. Usually it’s a small town claiming to have an object that is the world’s largest.
One of Australia’s most famous “big things” is a boxing crocodile in the town of Humpty Doo. Inspired by a play on the boxing kangaroo, the town erected the monument as a nod to the fact that there are more crocodiles in Australia’s Northern Territory than anywhere else in the world.
Other strange monuments include a replica of the Starship Enterprise in Canada, a giant chest of drawers in the US and an upside-down house in China.
