(1) dash 破折号

也叫em dash，与之相对的是 en dash，它用于表示数字的范围，如1989 - 2015、$100 - $200。在字符长度上，em dash > en dash > hyphen。

Dashes separate parts of a sentence, a little like parentheses or a semicolon.

破折号用于把句子分成几部分，有点儿像括号和分号。

A dash is longer than a hyphen.

破折号比连字符长。

Ill wash the dishes – Jan forgot to do them yesterday.

我去洗盘子——简昨天忘了洗了。

(2) Hyphen 连字符

A hyphen is used between parts of a compound word or name (more often as adjectives than nouns).

连字符用在复合词或名字中间（更多时候做为形容词而不是名词）。

It is also used to split a word by syllables to fit it on a line of text.

它也被用来根据音节拆分单词，从而换行。

The sixteen-year-old girl is a full-time student.

这个十六岁的女孩是位全日制学生。
